HI announces ‘Best Hostels in the World’

The best hostels in the world are found in Thailand, Norway, Japan, USA, Switzerland and Luxembourg. This was revealed when Hostelling International (HI) announced the winners of the “HI Best Hostel Awards 2009”. The most prestigious award went to HI Baan Dinso in Bangkok.

Hostelling International is the only global network of youth hostel associations, offering over 4,000 hostels in 90 countries worldwide, with over 1,500 bookable on www.hihostels.com. Every customer who makes a booking on hihostels.com is asked to rate various aspects of their stay. On a yearly basis, HI receives about 75,000 ratings from customers all over the world. Those ratings form the basis of the HI Best Hostel Awards.
Best Hostel 2009: HI Baan Dinso, Bangkok, Thailand.
This is the most prestigious award which was given to the hostel with the highest overall rating. HI Baan Dinso is an oasis of calm in the bustling city. All guests can expect a very warm welcome as well as exceptional service and friendliness. The hostel is also praised for its delicious breakfasts and favourite Thai dishes which can be enjoyed on the front porch.
Friendliest Hostel 2009: Tønsberg, Norway
At Tønsberg Hostel, located on the east coast of Norway, the staff go out of their way to look after the guests. And it is very much appreciated. Every single guest has given the staff the highest “Friendliness” rating. The hostel attracts a wide variety of guests: back packers, families with young children, sports groups and even business travellers.
Most Comfortable Hostel 2009: Kyoto - Utano, Japan
The recently refurbished hostel Kyoto - Utano has all the facilities one could ask for in a modern hostel. There is a good choice of accommodation; bigger shared rooms, ensuite twin rooms and everything in between. Other facilities include a big garden, tennis court, Japanese bath, free Wi-Fi, bicycle rental, barbecue corner and more.
Most Efficient Hostel 2009: Eastham (Mid Cape), USA
Surrounded by three acres of woodland in a quiet rural area, the hostel is only a short distance from the sandy beaches of Cape Cod. Accommodation is offered in cosy and newly renovated cabins. The friendly and helpful staff adds to the experience, and the breakfast pancakes seem to be a particular favorite among the guests.

Cleanest Hostel 2009: Grindelwald, Switzerland
Grindelwald in Switzerland is normally known for the stunning surroundings and breathtaking views of the Alps, but the hostel also has the highest customer rating when it comes to cleanliness. The architecture of the hostel is spectacular, with large panoramic windows, airy rooms and wooden panels.
Best Hostel Country 2009 – Luxembourg
This award is given to the country with the highest average hostel rating. The Luxembourg Youth Hostel Association is a network of 10 hostels, the vast majority with an overall rating way above average. The hostels are set in some of the country's greatest beauty spots where accommodation varies from modern chalet-style buildings to an old brewery and an atmospheric castle.
All award categories were based on ratings received during a 12 month period, from 1 November 2008 to 31 October 2009. During those 12 months, a minimum of 50 customer ratings was required to qualify. A hostel can only win one award category each year.
